It is with much sadness that MPA marks the passing of John Pennell AO, Life Member MPA and MPV.

For more than 50 years, John was a friend and loyal supporter of the world of modern pentathlon in Australia and internationally, including as President of the Oceania Confederation and as a board member of the UIPM.

UIPM President, Dr Klaus Schormann has sent his personal condolences to the Australian Modern Pentathlon Community in the form of a letter which can be read here:

John’s contribution extended from the grassroots, where he encouraged athletes and willingly pitched in to help run competitions, right through to the national and international level, where he played a very prominent role in the governance of the sport in its early days.  For several generations of pentathletes, the Pennell name was synonymous with the sport, and John’s legacy (and that of his family) will continue for many years to come.

In addition to his unsurpassed contributions to the sporting landscape, John is very fondly remembered by all who knew him for his generous nature, cheerful outlook and larger than life personality.

Our thoughts and wishes are with Heather, Jason, Louise, Mark and their families at this time of sorrow.
