John Pennell Volunteer of the Year Award
In 2023, MPA established an annual Volunteer of the Year Award in memory of the late John Pennell OAM.
John’s contribution to modern pentathlon in Australia spanned decades, generations and every level of the sport, from grassroots to the Olympics. He received one of the country’s highest honours, the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), in recognition of his services to pentathlon. John was a life member of both Modern Pentathlon Australia and Modern Pentathlon Victoria, a long-serving President of MPA, President of the Oceania Federation and a UIPM Executive Board Member.
Each year, MPA calls for nominations for the award based on the following criteria:

currently involved in the sport in a volunteer capacity
-
exerts a positive, unifying influence
-
acts as a role model for others, particularly in upholding the three values of Olympism, being excellence, respect and friendship
-
gives generously of their time and/or expertise
-
contribution/impact is wide-reaching and/or long lasting.
Past winners of the John Pennell Award are:
- Kate Thompson OAM and Adam Temesi (2023)
- Cherie Mordue and Brian Vagg (2024)
